Yesterday, Tuesday the 17th June, the summer season ascensions of Mont Blanc got off to a sad start with the news of a fatal accident.Independent local guide Patrick Monzat, 58, was killed by an avalanche as he was descending from the summit on the 'normal' route. Escorting two Canadian clients, the accident happened in the Couloir de Gouter, not far from the refuge of the same name at around 3500m.It seems, according to various witnesses, an avalanche caused the three who were roped together to fall. Other guides in the area went to the rescue and were joined by the PGHM. The two clients escaped with leg injuries and were helicoptered to Sallanches hospital.The guide's body was eventually recovered and brought back down to the Valley this morning as bad weather hindered the helicopter yesterday.It's understood with all the rain and cold, there is over 50cm of fresh snow at altitude since Sunday. As the summer season starts to take off, this tragedy is a reminder to us all that the mountains and mother nature are amazing, but at the same time have unfathomable hidden depths.

Un guide a trouvé la mort mardi en fin d'après-midi alors qu'il redescendait sur la voie normale du mont Blanc, avec deux clients originaires du Canada. Dans le couloir du Goûter, en aval du refuge éponyme, à près de 3500m, la cordée a dévissé sur plusieurs centaines de mètres. Les témoins ayant vu une coulée, la thèse de l'avalanche fatale a d'abord été envisagée. Il semblerait que la coulée ait été déclenchée consécutivement à la chute des trois hommes. Quatre guides présents dans le secteur et appartenant vraisemblablement au même groupe sont venus au secours des trois victimes, aux côtés de cinq hommes du peloton de gendarmerie de haute montagne (PGHM). Las le guide, Patrick Monzat, 58 ans, exerçant en indépendant dans la vallée de Chamonix, était décédé. Les jours de ses deux clients, blessés au fémur et au genou, n'étaient pas en danger. Vers 20h30, mardi soir, l'hélicoptère pouvait les rapatrier vers l'hôpital de Sallanches. Quant au professionnel, son corps a été héliporté ce matin à 9 heures dans la vallée. L'opération de secours a dû principalement se faire par caravane terrestre en raison des mauvaises conditions météo, qui régnaient jusqu'à la nuit dernière dans le massif.
